DJ Perch and Molara have been
out and about this Spring, taking their uplifting sound-system
style to fans both old and new.
A welcome return to Poland, was greeted with a fantastic reception
by the ever-keen Polish dub fans. In Opole we invited Jarek of
Polish dub band Tabu Duby to sing with us, doubly nice as we had
just finished some remixes of Jarek's latest work for release
in Poland. We cannot wait to get back there!
Our first-ever visit to Israel in April was a memorable experience
on several levels. In Tel Aviv (fantastic city, full of very warm
folk) we played in the basement loading bay of a multi-storey
shopping centre - a bizarre enough venue made even more so by
the presence of hundreds of dog-sized bats that would fly around
as soon as we dropped the bass in. We also played at the Tel Aviv
Earth Day in a park in central Tel Aviv - beautiful day, beautiful
people. The Israeli's long-standing reputation for trance parties
obviously extends to dub too! Speaking of trance parties, we had
the strange (to us at least) experience of walking along the beach
in Tel Aviv to find a crowd of people of traditional Hasidic appearance
going mental to a full-on trance / techno sound-system; we later
saw some of the same people on the back of a truck driving through
the town still blasting out the music to all and sundry - sights
we won't forget in a hurry!
Next we had sound system gigs in Holland, including a Queen's
Night party in Den Haag (Queen's day is a big public holiday in
Holland), with seven thousand very drunk and 'happy' Dutch folk
in attendance.
Following that we've had several very successful UK gigs including
Bristol, Glossop, Malvern (Molara's first home-town gig), and
London (Gaz's Rocking Blues).
In March DJ Perch went to Lille to produce an album with the French
dub band 10 Dubians - now released in France and Belgium on PIAS;
as a consequence of this, as part of the launch of this album
we had a sound system show on the * Batofar boat on The Seine
in Paris; we played with the Dubians in support, and much fun
was had by all, although the boat was swaying from side to side
all the way through the session. The following day was the French
national demo against the anti-sound-system legislation that is
being introduced there - *support the protests* - maintain the
right to party!
We are currently working on a new Zion Train album, for release
late in the year.
Meanwhile, the Headmix CD, 'Reach Out was released last month
on Universal Egg - Headmix have played a blinding set of launch
gigs and look set to have an amazing Summer.
Very much looking forward to a summer of festivals and fun - check
the website for further gig details.
