Charlie Dark's Blacktronica returns to Cargo for another live special featuring Jamaican legend Mikey Dread, his first UK show in 2 years plus full live Jamaican band. 'Blacktronica Live' is an exciting new addition to the highly acclaimed club nights and CDs.

Michael Campbell, a.k.a. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His original radio shows flourished by his immense collection of crucial vinyl, which became known as 'Dread at the Controls', was firmly established as the Number One Radio Show in Jamaica. Mikey was awarded Top Radio Personality of the Year in 1977-1978.

In 1979, Mikey decided to expand his career by getting more involved in the actual production of not only his own music, but also the work of others such as Sugar Minott, Junior Murvin, Earl Sixteen, Wally Bucker, Sunshine, Jah Grundy and Rod Taylor. His activities attracted the attention of The Clash, who asked Mikey to work with them.

Perhaps Mikey's work with The Clash has garnered him with the most recognition, but his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned punk stars from London. The album, "Black Market Clash" (which sold over 3 million copies), is a brilliant fusion of late 1970's punk rock and a heavy reggae bass and drum line. Soon thereafter, it was a must for just about every punk band to have a reggae cover song on their album.

Mikey's 'African Anthem' album, the sonic boost that catapulted him to his first dub fame, the rooting point of the aural adventures of the Dread At The Controls is set to be re-released this July on Auralux, the label from David Katz, David Hill and Marcus Weedon. For this Deluxe Edition, there are six corresponding dub tracks from the same period, several of which are previously unreleased. The album is interspersed with a selection of radio jingles from DATC, some of which will be very familiar to you, even if you've never had the chance to listen to a Dread At The Controls show before.

It's fitting then that Mikey Dread teams up with Blacktronica - the forum for black electronic music in the UK. From Carl Craig to Coltrane and everything inbetween.
