The Upsetter Live!! ..The truth as it happens!!
Part1.Aricd165Out June 2002
From the Scottish Highlands to the South Island of NewZealand,
the Lee Scratch Perry phenomenon has affected a variety of people.kings,
queens, students, workers, Indians, Africans, Chinese, Japanese,Flemish,
Irish, Americans, CanadiansPeople of all nations have attended
orwould like to attend the Upsetter show. His peers and (ex) musicians
tend toobserve the happenings with awe and amazement and envy.
°ßHow does he do it?°® isa typical question.
The fact that the sixty something year old gentleman withthe multicoloured
hair and punkish attire can out sell and upstage most other reggaeartists
is something most folks can°¶t come to terms with. The
fact that theaudiences are getting younger and younger is firm
proof that the Lee ScratchPerry has truly arrived at a legendary
status reserved for few.
Of all his protégés, onlyBob Marley has eclipsed
the profile of Pipecock Jackson.
Purist fans locked intothe Black Ark era, may be disappointed
that he is not producing on his Teac 4track machine, but Lee Perry
has long outgrown that stage. The truth is thatthose records other
than the few clear hits were not greatly appreciated attheir time
of release is easily forgotten. The fact that running a recordingstudio
from one°¶s home in Kingston, and issuing records is
clearly a businessactivity equivalent to selling oranges on the
Gaza Strip.
This series of live albumsis a selection of songs from 1984 -
2002 the first live tour in the UK in 1984,when I was asked by
Scratch then management, Tony & Adam to be the soundengineer
on the road. The musicians from this band were made up from the
SUSband from Harlesden, A full line up including a brass section
and percussion.Probably the largest band I have ever seened with
Lee.
After kicking off atDingwalls in London, we went up north finishing
up in Leeds, after a hotinterview with Scratch expert Steve Barker.
Between 1985 & 1988 wehad very little contact, though we resumed
working in the studios and on theroad in 1989.
By 1995 we started to worklive again, after completing the Black
Ark Experiments album.
Kicking off in France waschallenging, as due to a domestic dispute,
Scratch had no passport even morechallenging, was getting him
back into England.
Somehow we did it,resulting in one of the most exciting Lee Perry
tours ever. Backed by the Ariwabacking band The Robotiks, with
full backing vocals from Kofi, Black Steel& Victor Cross.
This cd was inspired by alot of crapp written by the so called
°ßPerry experts°® who choose to distort thefacts..
If you°¶ve been to morethan one Lee Perry show, then
you know that no 2 shows are the same. Also, younever know quite
what to expect! If you have never seen Scratch live, then thisis
a great insight to what you can expect. Like many great artists,
there arehighs and lows. We have selected tracks from the best
shows over the past 18years. As there are too many tracks for
1 cd this is part 1a total of 80 minsof Lee Scratch Perry, AKA
the Upsetter Live!! With the truth as it happens!!Hear it for
yourself!!
