Augustus Pablo Discography at http://www.xs4all.nl/~entiti/index.html
Greetings Geoff,
Thanks for your reply, I'm collecting
Pablo's recordings since the early 80's. I travelled with my two
other brothers Wim and Peter to the U.K. to buy the 45's and other
vinyl stuff. Because in our country it's difficult to get those
things. We have our own favorites: Wim - Burning Spear, Peter
- Bob Marley, and myself - Augustus Pablo - The Gladiators and
dub music. When Roger Steffens was in Holland some years ago,
he told us to do something with our collection, soon after that
we started our radio program: The Reggae Beat (Utrecht FM) and
now I have my own radio program called: Roots, Rock, Reggae (Nieuwegein
Radio). Roger told me how to start a discography, and I sold more
than 500 pieces all around the world. With a couple of friends
we started to publish the Marley's magazine "The Distant
Drums", Glen Lockley is head of the crew. I also have been
in Kingston and several places in Jamaica, have met Jah Rubbal
at his place, seen lots of
record shops and visit Rockers record shop.
Pablo himself wasn't there at that moment. Later he stayed at
our home for a couple of days, he was already ill that time, just
after he finished "King Selassie I Calling". We gave
him the advice to go to the hospital, because his leg was really
in bad shape. My friend Dominique Auffrey from France and I talked
about the discography, and ask what Pablo would do with those
early recordings still not yet released like the album "Rockers
In A Hungry Town",the 12" single "Silent Satta",
and so many items still only on vinyl.
Andrew Sloan, working at Joe Gibbs, was a great support for me.
He was the tour manager of Israel Vibration for many years and
when he was in our country we always talked about our projects.
He invited us back stage to do some interviews also with the members
of the band, my favorites Flabba Holt and T-Bird, we talk a lot
about the early days. A little story about Albert Griffiths. He
was surprised how many Gladiators singles were released and some
of them he never knew had come out on vinyl. Pity, not any payment
for them. I send 4 tapes with all the items,
So a friend from Denmark who has his own homepage about the Gladiators:
http://hjem.get2net.dk/sbn/gladi/index.htm#top give me the inspiration to try to make finally
my Pablo discography, to let the people know how busy Pablo was,
not only playing his own tunes, but also producing for the talents
he had in his studio. So I'm hoping that once a record company
will ask me to assist them to release those oldies.
Like another company did with the early Gladiators 45"s.
To spread out the music. Not to keep them in a dusty place. And
still after almost 20 years I have to tell you, it's not complete.
But any info is welcome.
