Kiss 100 is on the hunt for pirate radio DJs to become the
next
generation of A-list specialist radio DJs.
Four finalists will be given their own one-off two hour show
on Kiss
100 in the first week of September, showcasing their skills between
11pm - 1am. It will culminate in an on-air 'soundclash' on Friday
5th
September, with each of the four DJs getting half-an-hour to play
back-to-back against each other. The winner of a live listener
vote
will get their own show on Kiss 100, with an initial 3 month contract
taking them straight from pirate radio to the biggest station
for
young Londoners.
The search for underground talent begins in July and is open
to all
genres of music. Listeners will be invited to nominate themselves
or
a DJ they think the rest of young London should know about. An
expert
panel will sift through the thousands of tapes that are expected
and
four finalists will be shortlisted. Ultimately, Kiss 100 listeners
will decide the winner when each DJ plays-off against the others
and
listeners vote via text.
The Kiss Pirate Soundclash seeks to give a new generation of
pirate DJ
the opportunity to reach a wider audience - and attain a legal
status
for their broadcast skills. Kiss is one of the names most associated
with pirate radio, having taken to the airwaves illegally as a
pirate
in 1985. By September 1990, it succeeded at its second attempt
to win
an official London-wide FM licence. Kiss 100 continues to maintain
the spirit of that passion for music which originally brought
it to
the airwaves.
Many of the Kiss 100 DJ line-up started out on pirate radio.
UK Garage
DJ EZ joined Kiss 100 in 1999, but was previously a pirate DJ
with
Dance FM and Freak FM.
Kiss has been the breeding ground for a number of the biggest
names in
the industry who have gone on to attain international recognition
following their formative years as pirates and then legitimate
DJs on
Kiss 100. These included Trevor Nelson, Tim Westwood, Judge Jules
and
Danny Rampling.
