ZINC FENCE RECORD OF THE WEEK

Baby Cham's DJ moniker, suggesting as it does a fizzy non alcoholic beverage with a cocktail cherry stuck in it, does not do justice to the man's performance at the mike. With this latest effort, Baby Cham really should consider naming himself: Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum. Guaranteed Full Strength. It might take up more space on the record label but would be a more accurate indication of what the punters will hear when they get the record home.

The Bounce is a brutal sparse rhythm even by current dancehall standards and over it Baby Cham delivers a lyric of equal authority and sparseness, each terse line ending in 'man' with powerhouse statements such as "Mi never see the food, much less mi see the plate, man" and moments of lyrical wit such as "Him move like him a Cayman". Much of the lyric seems to be concerned with certain men who Baby Cham holds in suspicion and of whom he says:

"Me an dem no grounds man, so me have fi frowns man, see dem down a town man, hook up with a brown man."

Baby Cham has been making tough, guaranteed full strength tunes for a while now but often on rhythms where more established DJs got the lime light. These include Many Many, also on the Xtra Large label, which was released alongside Bounty Killer's Worthless Bwoy, Desperate Measures on K.Licious on the same rhythm as Buju Banton's Opportunity and his fine Ghetto Pledge on the Bug rhythm alongside Bounty Killer's Look on Mad House. Another Level, his collaboration with Bounty Killer earlier this year on that same rhythm, finally alerted the reggae world that Baby Cham was himself moving up to a higher level.

Perhaps Man and Man is the record that will finally give Baby Cham the credit he deserves. This time around there are many other fine pieces on The Bounce rhythm, notably Beenie Man's Trouble Maker and with further contributions from Degree, Frankie Sly and Chico but my feeling is that this time around it will be Baby Cham's Man And Man that gets the dancehall play.
